Barbara M. (Woods) Sunderland , age 91 of Sidney, NE passed away Friday, March 16, 2018 at the home of her son, Michael K. Sunderland in Sidney, NE
Cremation has been held, and Barbara’s ashes will be scattered at a later date which has not been decided on. There will be no formal funeral service. You may view Barbara’s Book of Memories, leave condolences, photos and stories at www.gehrigstittchapel.com.

Barbara was born February 14, 1927 in Neodesha, Kansas, and grew up in Oklahoma City, OK.
Barbara met her future husband, Calvin Sunderland, at a USO dance in Oklahoma City. A romance quickly blossomed, and Barbara and Calvin were married in June 1945 at Oklahoma City, OK. As Calvin was still in the U. S. Navy, they first lived in Washington, D.C. where Calvin attended bomb disposal school. The couple was still in Washington, D.C. when WWII ended.
They moved to Kiowa, KS upon Calvin’s discharge from the Navy. The first several years were spent job hunting and surviving on minimal wages. Shortly after the arrival of their first child, Michael, Barbara and Calvin embarked on a lifelong career in the newspaper business. In 1956, the family moved to Fairbanks, AK. They were in Fairbanks, when Alaska became a state, when the Good Friday Earthquake hit southwestern Alaska and when Fairbanks was flooded in the late 1960’s.
Barbara, Calvin and son Michael, started the Humboldt Sun newspaper from scratch in Winnemucca, NV in January of 1972. Starting as a weekly, they soon were publishing twice a week. Today, the Humboldt Sun is a daily publication.
After their successes with the Humboldt Sun, they sold it and bought a publication plant in Albion, NE, which they and their son, Michael, operated for several years before Calvin and Barbara retired in 1990 and moved to the Delta, CO area. Two years after Calvin died. Barbara moved to Nebraska and was residing with her son, Michael, when she passed away.
Barbara is survived by two children, son Michael and wife Dorothy of Sidney and daughter Kerry, of Delta, CO. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 10 great- grandchildren, and one great-great grandson, as well as a sister, Gwynne Palmer.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, George and Velma (Catron) Woods, and her husband, Calvin Sunderland.
