MILDRED ALFTER

Mildred Alfter age 96 of Sidney, NE passed away Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Sidney.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, October 20th with Rosary services at 10:00 A.M., prior to Mass. Both services will be in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Jim Heithoff officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Wednesday from 1-7:00 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made in Mildred’s name to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Gehrig-Stitt Chapel & Cremation Service, LLC is in charge of Mildred’s care and funeral arrangements.
Mildred Alfter was born on May 25, 1920 to Frank and Mary (Hodgman) Alfter. She attended grade school in a rural schoolhouse in Garden County, NE until the fourth grade. The family moved to Sidney where Mildred attended Saint Patrick’s Academy, graduating as Valedictorian of her class.
Mildred worked for John Deere Implement Company in Sidney and Omaha after graduation, retiring after forty-three years. Through the years she was a generous and caring person, sharing her talents and treasure with anyone in need. Mildred was a past member of Legion of Mary, Saint Patrick’s Altar Society and enjoyed working at the rummage house.
Survivors include nieces, nephews and spouses: Ann and Bob Schaaf of Sidney, Joe and Linda Helfrich of Littleton, CO, Rita and Jerry Wilson of Gering, Mary and Bill Hughes of Chappell, John and Marion Schuchardt of Bloomfield, NJ, Jim and Roxanne Schuchardt of Omaha, Joe Schuchardt of Littleton, CO, Janell and Wes Mathews of Gering and Jane and Charlie Caselman of Wichita, KS; Many great-nieces and nephews and extended family members.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, one brother: John, sisters: Mabel Helfrich, Virginia Nicolas and Rosemary Schuchardt.
