MARY ANN RIEKEN
Mary Ann Rieken, age 86 of Sidney, Nebraska passed away in the early morning on August 16, 2015 in the comfort of her home that she loved for the wonderful times and memories she shared with her family and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, August 20th with Wake Services at 6:00 P.M., Wednesday evening, August 19th. Both services will be in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Jim Heithoff officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery following Mass. Mary Ann was born on November 20, 1928 in the Taylor Hospital in Sidney, Nebraska to John J. and Mary Nelson Treinen. She spent her childhood years on a farm south of Sidney.
She attended school in Lorenzo, Country School District 99 and St. Patrick’s Academy, graduating in 1946. She worked as a telephone operator under Gladys Bell and then attended business school in Denver, Colorado. Mary Ann also worked at the Sioux Army Depot as a stenographer for Captain Levy.
In 1948, Mary Ann met the love of her life, Leonard, at the roller skating rink. They were married on June 7, 1950 at St. Patrick’s Church, officiated by Msgr. Anton Link. They stayed on the farm raising their children. Years later, they moved into town continuing to enjoy their life and visiting with family and friends.
Mary Ann was talented in many ways. She was an excellent seamstress and made many lovely ceramics. She was the owner of Ann’s Gifts and Things. She was also an excellent cook, one of her favorites was her cinnamon rolls, and Father Jim sure did love them! Mary Ann loved to fish and so enjoyed her time at Lake McConaughy. She gave much of her time to her church, serving as Regent for Catholic Daughters for four years and was actively involved in the Altar Society.
She is survived by her husband, Leonard Rieken; their three sons, Ronald Rieken of Sidney, Nebraska, Keith (Marilyn) Rieken of San Diego, California, and Chris (Glenda) Rieken of Sidney, Nebraska; her grandchildren, Elijah Rieken of Denver, Colorado, Brian (Chandra) Rieken of Pensacola, FL, Kevin (Toni) Rieken of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Brett Rieken of San Diego, California; and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters, Dorys Fehringer of Peetz, Colorado and Pat (Paul) Lafkas of Cheyenne, Wyoming; her sisters-in-law Dorothy “Dot” C. (Fehringer) Treinen, Patricia L. (Saidy) Treinen, Marilyn J. (Brinkhaus) Rieken, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her daughter, Rose Jean Rieken; her parents, John and Mary Treinen; her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and William Raddatz; her brothers, John N. and Kenneth B. Treinen; and her mother & father-in-law Josephine (Oliverius) Rieken and Bernard H. Rieken; her brothers-in-law, George Fehringer, Don B. Rieken, Melvin “Butch” Wegner, and her sister-in-law Mildred “Milly” M. (Rieken) Wegner.
Mary Ann was a very kind and giving person and will be missed by all that knew her.
