Gene, as friends and family knew him, was born to Cecil Glen and Nellie Mae (Yank) Hume on a farm north of Lodgepole, Nebraska. He lived on the farm with his brothers Don, Jerald and sister Ila Mae.
Gene attended high school in Lodgepole NE until his junior year when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After basic training he was assigned to the USS Montpelier which was involved in active combat in Okinawa, Leyte and Guadalcanal during WW II. He obtained three battle stars and served in the Pacific from the Philippines to Japan.
After the war, Gene returned to Sidney and worked various jobs before being trained as a Mechanic by his uncle Gay Thurow. He then went to work for Gibson Ford for many years.
He met Maxine Kathleen Thelma Jurgens at a dance in Sidney. The two fell in love and married on February 22, 1947 in Saint Francis, Kansas.
Gene and Maxine welcomed three boys, Steven, Richard and Russell in the following years and they lived in Sidney until 1957 when the family took over a farm east of Peetz, CO, after Gene’s father Cecil retired.
Gene worked the farm with the help of his family until health issues forced him to retire, and he and Maxine moved back to Sidney, Maxine passed away in 1992, Gene lived on his own, traveling, playing cards and spending time with friends and family. Gene was the last surviving WWII combat Marine in Cheyenne County.
