Charlotte Fay Steffens, the daughter of John and Ethel (Hines) Herboldsheimer, was born on March 31, 1934 at Kimball, NE. She grew up in Potter, NE and was a lifelong resident of Cheyenne County.
She was most proud, first and foremost of her family. She greatly enjoyed raising flower and vegetable gardens. Charlotte took pride in taking care of her yard and up through age 83 was mowing her lawn herself. Even though she did not graduate from high school, she was very pleased to earn her GED in 1990 at age 56. Charlotte had an appreciation for her house and liked nothing better than to invite you into her kitchen for a cup of coffee. Her kitchen was special place where friends and family would gather.
Charlotte began ironing as a young mother to help support her family and was still taking in ironings and hemming hunting pants at age 83. She did iron for people for more than 60 years. She loved to read and attend her monthly book club. Charlotte exhibited a sense of service by her volunteer work at her church and the Cheyenne County Historical Association. She was a humble person who let her service speak for itself without drawing attention to her personally.
On August 9, 1950, Charlotte was united in marriage to Leonard Edgar Steffens in Potter. Together she and Len raised four children, Lester, Jerry, Doug and Susan.
Survivors include her (4) children: Lester and wife Lynn of New Oxford, PA, Jerry and wife Diann, Doug and wife Marla and Susan Sutton and husband Brad all of Sidney; (1) brother: John Herboldsheimer and wife Karen of Potter; (3) sisters: Coral Rapp and Alice Chaon of Sidney and Jane Luke of Ashtabula, OH; (13) grandchildren: Amanda and Justin Robinson, Megan and Nathan Sell, Drew and Kayla Steffens, Lisa and Jim Cochran, Amy and Jeff Winkler, Katie and Chris Barton, Tanessa and Jason Kubat, Katelyn Bouise, Shayla Bouise, Tatum Bouise, Nick and Anita Sutton, Brodie Sutton and Ashlyn Sutton; (11) great-grandchildren, (1) great-great-grandchild; and brother-in-law, Bob Steffens and wife Deloris of Sidney and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leonard in 2009, (3) brothers: Walter, Archie and Danny Herboldsheimer, (3) infant sisters and several extended family members.
