Doris Ann Stevens was born January 9, 1936 in a farmhouse southeast of Wallace, NE to Steve and Una (Kennedy) Hengen, the third of six children. She attended school and graduated in Wallace in 1955. Her sophomore and junior years of high school were at St. Patrick’s Academy in Sidney where she met her future husband. October 29, 1955 Doris was united in marriage to Wesley L. Stevens at Wallace. They moved to a farm near Potter where they made their home. To this union, two children were born, Herbert and Janet. Doris remained on the farm after her husband’s death on Dec. 13, 2001.
Doris enjoyed many things in life. First being her church. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for many years and was active in many ways including the Fall Bazaar helping to make dressing and volunteering at the Rummage House. She worked with the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, cooked at Buffalo Bend Café for many years, enjoyed crafts, painting ceramics and making rosaries for many to enjoy. Doris loved to crochet and making beautiful blankets for her children and grandchildren. Spring was a wonderful time for her to work with nature by planting and raising a garden. She was an avid cook, always saying it was fun being in the kitchen and looked forward to family gatherings.
