Ann Marie Schaaf, the daughter of Charles Edward and Mabel Frances (Alfter) Helfrich, was born in Sidney on March 6, 1939. Ann attended St. Patrick’s Academy from first through twelfth grade, and graduated with the class of 1957.
On December 29, 1958, Ann was united in marriage to Bob Schaaf. They were blessed with three children - Christopher, Stephanie, and Paula.
Ann loved being a homemaker and volunteer throughout her lifetime. There were always dozens of chocolate chip cookies and creative birthday cakes for each of her children, as well as outstanding meals, all of which were prepared with love. Her presence will continue to be felt each Christmas, as stockings were lovingly created for each of her children and grandchildren.
Many babies were blessed with Ann’s handiwork, as she created layettes and donated them to Sidney Memorial Hospital to be given to newborns. The time she spent volunteering at St. Patrick’s Rummage House with her friends were some of the best years of her life, as well as being an active member of King’s Daughters. Ann’s strong Catholic faith was ongoing, as she attended daily mass and lectored weekly. One of her proudest personal moments was when she was commissioned Admiral of the Great Navy of Nebraska in 1998. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Bob; son Chris and wife Jane of Sidney; two daughters and their spouses - Stephanie and Jamie Rush of Cozad; and Paula and Josh Hans of Castle Rock, Colorado; grandchildren Michelle Deaver, Jacob and Sadie Rush, and Lucas and Matthew Hans; great-grandson Liam Deaver; siblings Joe (Linda) Helfrich; Rita (Jerry) Wilson; and Mary (Bill) Hughes; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister.
