Condolences

Condolence From: Captain Richard Schaffert
Condolence: During the summer of 1967, I was flying combat against North Vietnam from the deck of the USS Oriskany. We were in the midst of the deadly Rolling Thunder operation in which we lost 70 percent of the pilots in our Air Wing. Morale was not very high, we were hearing bad things were happening to our 13 pilots who had been shot down and captured. Then we received a "care package" from a 13-year-old student at Sidney High School. It contained cookies and news from the school and the local area. It was like experiencing a breath of fresh air. For a few precious moments, the pilots in my VF -111 Sundowner Squadron remembered what home was like, and what we were really fighting for. Our spirits were lifted and we returned to the fight. That student was my cousin Marilyn. I think some of those pilots are saying "thanks, Kid!" to her right now. God Bless You, Marilyn, and keep your memory in our hearts forever. Your cousin Rich Schaffert aka Brown Bear
