Colleen (Coyle) Gass was called to her eternal rest on January 18, 2017, while a resident of Memorial Extended Care in Sidney. She was born in Sidney, on November 27, 1926 to Thomas (Barnie) and Etha Coyle. She graduated from Sidney High School. Since WWII was on she volunteered as a civil servant and was trained in Omaha, NE as a Radio Technician. This basically was a Morse Code Operator that took down messages since that was the primary source of communication during that time. She was stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH during the war years.
Following the war she was married to Bernard H. Gass, of Peetz, CO also a graduate of Sidney High School. They were married on June 8, 1946. Bernie served in the U.S. Navy and upon returning was employed by BS&B in the oil field service. Following a transfer and brief stay in Vernal, UT, the family returned to Sidney, where they partnered in opening Bernie’s Packing Plant. Later they acquired a dry cleaning business, later turning it into Bernie’s Tack Shop in downtown Sidney where they sold western boots, saddles, and other gear. Colleen helped Bernie in all the business endeavors and also worked for Vern Draper as a photo retouching technician.
In her later years, Colleen suffered macular degeneration and became functionally blind. Yet she lived sufficiently in her own home until the fall of 2015, when she became a resident of Sloans Estates. She was there until Christmas Eve when she was diagnosed with cancer, and moved to SRMC Extended Care.
Colleen was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard H. Gass, her son Thomas H. Gass, Tom’s daughter Kimberly, and her mother and father. She is survived by Terry and husband Mark Anthony of Monument, CO, Carol Gass (Tom’s wife) of Cheyenne, WY, Gayle and husband Rev. Alan Borcher of Riverton, UT, and Larry B. Gass of Dickenson, ND. She has fourteen grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren.
