Wilfred R. “Nig” Nelson, 100, entered into rest Monday, June 13, 2016 at Sidney Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was the fifth son born on the family homestead south of Potter in Cheyenne County, Nebraska on July 31, 1915 to Edward M. & Verda J. (Glassburn) Nelson. He attended District 16 school through the 10th grade & graduated from Sidney High School. Funeral Services will be held Saturday afternoon, June 18th at 3:00 at the Prairie West Church in Potter with Pastor Betsy Galloway-Carew officiating, with military graveside services in the Potter Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 1-7:00 P.M., with family present will be at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel Friday from 5:00 – 6:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made in Nig’s name to Prairie West Church or the Potter American Legion Post #291. He joined the US Navy on August 13, 1934 and was aboard the USS California. He was honorably discharged on June 14, 1938 as MM 2/C. He returned to start farming in Cheyenne County where he met Dorothy M. Lipke. They were married November 12, 1940 and celebrated their 75th anniversary last summer. To this union, three “children” were born…daughter Myra, son Kae & daughter Lea. February, 1942 brought “Nig” to San Diego Naval Base where he served in WWII until October, 1945. His son, Kae & 3 grandsons followed in his footsteps serving in the military services.
“Nig” served on various committees, boards & organizations, Lorenzo School Board, Cheyenne County ASC, Nebraska State ASC, American Legion to name a few. He became District Director of Federal Crop Insurance Corporation over 27 counties in western Nebraska & eastern Wyoming.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy, daughter Myra (Ken) Noteboom, son Kae (Cheryl) Nelson, daughter Lea Wiemers & unadopted son Chuck (Pat) Hammond; grandsons, Tim (Kelly) Noteboom, Eric Ruppert, Brandon Ruppert, Josh Nelson, Justin Nelson; granddaughters, Robyn (Todd) Anderson, Melissa (Michael) Constantine, Carolyn (Ercan) McCourt, & Christy & Eric Jensen; 14 great grandchildren & 2 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Kristi Noteboom Perrotto, 2 great grandchildren, 8 brothers & 2 sisters.
